Pieces of Me

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?” - Martin Luther King, Jr.

This week is National Volunteer Week.

Would you be surprised if I told you Mullen is lacking in volunteers?

With over 40 volunteer organizations in town, that might be hard to believe. Four years ago this week the Tribune featured all of those organizations.

But you’ll see the same people in many of those organizations. And when boards need new members, they struggle finding volunteers to say yes.

I’m not saying you need to join every organization you can. But there has to be at least one that mirrors your interests or passions.

If you think a local event that is put on by an organization could be done better, I bet they would love a passionate volunteer like yourself.

If you enjoy being around younger people, maybe becoming a church youth group or Girl Scout leader or a TeamMates mentor is your place.

I’m going to point my finger specifically at my fellow Millennials because this age group seems to be particularly uninvolved. If you are between the ages of 25-40, it’s time for you to step up and give back to your community.

I don’t care if you are or aren’t originally from Mullen. I don’t care if you did or didn’t volunteer as a kid. I don’t care if you do or don’t have kids. I don’t care if you live in town or on a ranch. I don’t care what your occupation is.

If you aren’t volunteering your time in any way, you are doing a disservice to our community.
