3rd place News Photo of the Year

Kearney - Results from the Nebraska Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest were announced Saturday night, April 30 at an awards banquet at the Crowne Plaza in Kearney.

Categories for both weeklies and dailies are focused on writing, photography, advertising, digital, design and creativity.

More than 2,400 separate entries were judged by members of the New York Press Association.

Gerri Peterson of Mullen’s Hooker County Tribune placed third in Division A (based on newspaper circulation) in Reader Interaction/ Contest for her Valentine’s Day Contest, Advertising Campaign for Sandhills Family Dental ads she designed and in News Photography for a pig wrestling photo she took.

She also placed third in the all class News Photo of the Year category - competing against all weekly and daily newspapers in the state, excluding dailies in Omaha and Lincoln - with the pig wrestling photo. The judge’s comments read, “I’ve never seen this event displayed in your photo. I really like the instant moment in time this picture captures. The pig is just ‘squeaking’ past his legs fearing for its life and the girl’s expression is carefree even though she’s totally covered in mud. If I were a kid again I would like to try this... but only once! Congrats!”
