The Mullen Rural Health Clinic currently has free colon cancer screening kits available. No appointment is necessary, but colon cancer screening must be due (three years since the last test or colonoscopy). Patients then mail the kit to the participating lab. Testing is through the Nebraska Colon Cancer Screening Program.

Earlier this year, the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) College of Pharmacy and Nebraska Extension partnered with local healthcare providers to conduct a pharmacy access needs assessment in Hooker County. The goal was to better understand the challenges residents face in accessing medications and pharmacy services and identify potential solutions that meet local needs.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the survey. Your feedback provided valuable insight into the barriers community members experience, and the information gathered is directly informing ongoing discussions and planning efforts.
The assessment confirmed significant concerns related to pharmacy access, including long travel distances, delays in obtaining medications and the need for more convenient pharmacy services. The results also showed strong community interest in exploring new approaches to improving access closer to home.
Since the survey was completed, the UNMC College of Pharmacy has been reviewing the findings and working with the Nebraska Board of Pharmacy to better understand policy requirements and ensure that any potential solutions are safe, sustainable and compliant with state regulations.
Planning efforts are continuing, and community input remains central to the process. Additional updates will be shared as work progresses.
