Watermelon feed, Mullen football tradition

Dick Macke of Macke’s Grocery cut up watermelon as fast as he could Monday night as the Mullen High School football team, followed by the Mullen youth football teams, grabbed piece after piece after their practices. The watermelon feed has been a Mullen Bronco football tradition for over 30 years, and this was the first year the youth teams were able to partake in it as well. It took about eight watermelons to feed the boys in grades 3-12. Dick said the high school boys must have been worried there wouldn’t be enough for the younger kids because they didn’t eat as much as some years, but the younger kids weren’t shy, with several of them going back for fourths and fifths!
