Mullen Helping Hands to replace Meals on Wheels

In November of 1986, Together-in-Faith and the Pioneer Memorial Hospital Board started “Meals on Wheels.” Together in-Faith is an organization with representatives from each of the five churches in Mullen. The meals were prepared by the nursing home kitchen and were initially delivered by the Handi-Bus. Volunteers from the five churches delivered the meals when the Handi-Bus was not available. Later Together-in-Faith took over the delivery of the meals. A schedule was developed with each church delivering for a month at a time.

Since the announcement of the closure of the nursing home, Together-in-Faith has been exploring many options to continue Meals on Wheels. They viewed this program as vitally important to the community. They were not able to find a way for the meals to be prepared locally, but with the assistance of the North Platte office of the Nebraska Agency on Aging, another option is made available.

Together-in-Faith has developed a program they have titled, “Mullen Helping Hands.” The meals will be purchased from “Mom’s Meals.” This is one of many companies in the country that prepares meals which are delivered to the doorstep of anyone who wants them. “Mom’s Meals” were tested and found to be delivered in a timely manner, in an insulated box, with generous servings, and quite tasty.

There are currently two people here in Mullen receiving “Mom’s Meals.” Both are pleased with the food and the support of “Mullen Helping Hands.”

If you are interested in receiving meals, contact the program coordinator Ken Clark. He can be reached by calling his home phone 308-546-2791 or cell phone 308-546-7388.
