Gerald Glass, Sr.

Gerald “Gary” Glass, Sr., age 80 of Whitman, Nebraska, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2023, at his home in Whitman.

Gerald Lee Glass was born on July 31, 1943, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Willard Hicks and Ena Margaret (Call) Glass.

Gary attended his early years of school at the Whitman School and graduated high school from Hyannis in 1962.

After graduation, Gary traveled the country working various jobs at gas stations and in the road departments.

He returned to Whitman in the early 1990s to care for his parents.

Gary had the rural mail route for several years. He loved animals, especially dogs and always had a treat for the pets on his route.

Gary loved old cars and going to car shows, working on his Camaro and, for a time, riding his Harley Davidson, making a few wild trips to Sturgis.

He loved war history and had a collection of artifacts and books/movies from the Civil War, World War 1, World War 11 and Vietnam.

Gary was a longtime member of the NRA and the Alliance Rifle Club. He loved guns and ammo and spent a lot of time reloading ammo and target practicing and sighting in his guns.

Gary kept the community beautiful, mowing lawns, helping take care of the Whitman Community Club, the Whitman and Hyannis cemeteries and the Whitman Church.

Gary didn’t realize how much he meant to the people in the community and how much we miss him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Gerald “Butch” Glass Jr., a stepson Wayne Glass and by his sister Gloria.

There will be no services held and his remains will be buried in the Whitman Cemetery.
