Milton Arthur Amsberry, age 86, passed away at the Sandhills Care Center in Ainsworth, Nebraska, on Oct. 3, 2025. He was known to his many friends as “Milt.”
He was born on Sept. 20, 1939, to Arthur E. and Helen V. (Kidder) Amsberry in Mullen, Nebraska. He was named after his grandfather, Milton Kidder known to many as “Poke” and his father Arthur. He graduated from Mullen High School at the age of 16.
Milt worked road construction and later for John Buchfinck at Whitman for many years. He moved to Chadron in 1973 so his sons, Neal and Garry could attend school there. Milt worked for Henkins Implement and then went to work for Johnston Fuel Liners, driving truck. He had great teachers in three experienced drivers, Bill Finley, Andy Taylor and Don Van Fleet.
It was there that Milt met Glenda Wobig, a friend of his sister Bytha. They were both attending Chadron State College. Glenda and Milt were married on Aug. 31, 1974, in Valentine as he was transferred to Valentine by Johnston Fuel Liners. In 1980 he purchased his first truck, and the rest was history. Amsberry Trucking was born. He belonged to the Chadron Elks Club and is still a member today.
Not a church going person, he always said God took care of him and rode along on his left knee. Milt and Glenda fished a lot, catching the state muskie record in 1984.
Milt was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Iva Polanco. Milt spent a lot of time at Grandma Amsberry’s while growing up.
He is survived by his wife Glenda of 51 years; sons, Neal of Arlington, Neb., and Garry of Texas; sister, Bytha (Kirk) Garner of Ajo, Ariz.; grandchildren, Dayna, Kaycee and Neal Junior; greatgrandchildren, Jayden, Paisley, Christopher, Karissa, Johnny, Violet, Alexander and Oliver; sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Lloyd Schneider and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral service for Milton Amsberry was held Oct. 11, 2025, at the Valentine Methodist Church. Burial followed at Mount Hope Cemetery in Valentine. Sandoz Chapel of the Pines was entrusted with service arrangements.
