Monday, March 23, marks Day 48 of the 60-day session. The Legislature will meet for four days each of the next three weeks, and then could return on April 17 for Day 60 to discuss any remaining veto overrides.

Another year and another birthday week has come and gone at our house. Our kids are 4 years and 2 days apart (zero medical intervention - all God’s plan!), so March is extra celebratory here.

As we begin the week with 17 legislative days remaining, the two budget bills, LB1071 (main budget bill) and LB1072 (fund transfer bill), both passed the first round of debate with several unresolved issues. Expect significant floor debate as we move to Select File.

Dave Says

Dear Dave, My husband and I are making great progress in paying off almost $100,000 in debt from student loans and a car loan using your debt snowball system. Our current combined income is $90,000 a year. He makes $45,000 as a teacher, and I make $45,000 as a retail assistant manager.

I want to begin my article this week by paying tribute to Sergeant 1st Class Noah Tietjens of Bellevue, Nebraska, who lost his life while serving his country when he was killed in an unmanned drone attack at the Port of Shuaiba in Kuwait. Five others also lost their lives during that attack.

I hate being scared.I also hate snakes, a fact my husband Dane knew but found out to what extent not long after we were married.I was at the kitchen sink one day when he came home from work, coming up behind me and giving me a hug.

Dear Dave, I’m 50 years old, and through a series of bad life decisions, I have nothing set aside for retirement. Now that I’m finally in a better place financially, I’m getting to the age where people say to invest conservatively.

Somewhere in the road ditch between Whitman and Mullen on Nebraska Highway 2 was supposed to be a wad of chewed gum, thrown out the car window at 68 mph. Actually probably 70 mph - my husband was the one driving, after all.
