It is a busy time of the year for the Jacobson household. Julie and I both celebrated another birthday on Nov. 26, and we had a great Thanksgiving meal the next day with both our children, their spouses, and Julie’s 96-year-old mother.

It’s officially Christmas card season and I’m loving it.First of all, who doesn’t love getting happy mail!?I grew up with pen pals from all over the country - I even had one from Africa! Sadly, we lost touch years ago and I’m not sure where she is today.

Many constituents have been asking about the upcoming session and how the legislature will balance the budget with an over $400 million projected budget deficit at the beginning of the session. There are as many answers to this question as there are state senators.

We may sometimes wonder why, but I’ve always believed everything happens for a reason.This past weekend was an example of that. We were supposed to be in eastern Nebraska for a Thanksgiving weekend family gathering, but with winter weather forecasted across the state, we ended up canceling.

The Flatwater Free Press printed an article on Nov. 16, 2025, stating that Nebraska may return $350 million in federal funding meant to boost Nebraskans’ broadband. Although this headline is technically correct, there is much more to the story than the headline suggests.

Our 12-year-old has been pulling the, “I’m not a 40-yearold woman…” line for a few months.Now that I’m actually 40, he won’t get as much guff from me. But less than a week after turning 40, one of his lines became a reality.

Last Friday, the city of Lexington received the devastating news that Tyson Foods, the largest employer in the area, will close its plant on January 20, 2026. When a town of just over 10,000 loses over 3,200 jobs, it is a big deal.
