Robert Lee Maire was born Nov. 30, 1940, in Mullen, Nebraska, to John “Jack” and Mildred (Romell) Maire. He passed away on April 4, 2025, in Fairbury, Nebraska, at the age of 84. Robert grew up in Mullen and attended Mullen Public Schools. He later received his GED in 1980.
After high school Robert worked for Milander Motors in Mullen. On May 15, 1959, Robert married Jannet Kay Newman. To this union five sons were born. Twins, Lloyd Lynn and Floyd Lee, Robert Gordon, Craig Allen and Marshall Todd. On Feb. 12, 1971, Robert married Patti Jo Shelbourn. To this union one daughter, Carmela Jean, was born.
Robert worked various jobs throughout his life, including Co-op in Hayes Center and Plymouth, Neb.; Farmland Foods, Crete, Neb.; Cargill Foods, Ottumwa, Iowa; Hoover, Beatrice, Neb.; and Molex, Lincoln, Neb., retiring in 2007, at the age of 67.
Robert and Patti lived on a farm near Plymouth where he enjoyed raising dogs of all varieties, including Coonhounds and Dobermans; peacocks; chickens and an occasional hog. He enjoyed working on cars with his sons, helping local farmers with cattle chores, gardening, tending fruit trees and riding his four-wheeler while being followed by his faithful companion dog, Dottie. He was also a member of the Fairbury Elks Club for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Patti, of Plymouth; sons Lloyd (Bev) Maire of Grand Island, Neb.; Floyd Maire of Goodyear, Ariz.; Robert Maire of Crete, Neb.; Craig (Susan) Maire of Valentine, Neb.; Todd Maire of Fairbury, Neb.; daughter Carmela Alsobrook of Plymouth, Neb.; sister Peggy (Carl) Simonson of Hordville, Neb.; brother Jim (Sue) Maire of Gretna, Neb.; brothers-inlaw Earl “Junior” Shelbourn, Valentine, Neb., Mick Sullivan, Valparaiso, Neb., and Patrick Sullivan, Las Vegas, Nev.; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren, with number 22 on the way; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents John “Jack” and Mildred Maire; brother John Maire; and sister-in-law Velma Maire.
Graveside service is Saturday, April 12, at 11 a.m., MT, at Cedarview Cemetery, Mullen, Nebraska. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home, Fairbury, Nebraska, is handling arrangements.
