Pieces of Me

A comment I make to people often is, “You’re never too old to learn new tricks.” Thanks to a bunkhouse project at my parents’ where the labor source is us, I had a weekend full of learning new tricks. This project has been talked about since around 2010 and slowly in the works since 2016.

Last week, I sat down with Lincoln County Assessor Julie Stenger to prepare for my first meeting of the Governor’s Property Tax Valuation Working Group. Julie has been in her role for many years and has a great understanding of the assessment process.

Dear Dave, Is there any flexibility in your rule about not spending more than 25% of your take-home pay on rent or monthly mortgage payments? I live downtown in Washington, D.C., and I’m finding it’s pretty hard to do here.

One of the first things our family did when the 202324 school calendar was set was schedule our 4th annual trip to the Airbnb gem we love near Leshara, Nebraska. Having one more weekend of summer was perfect to decompress after the busy week of fair before starting school.

This past week started with Julie and I attending parades in Brady, Stapleton, and Mullen. We then spent this Saturday in Maxwell, participating in their annual parade. Eating some of the three delicious pies from Maxwell’s pie auction was the perfect end to the week.

Dave Says

Dear Dave, My husband recently opened his own commercial painting company. We know he will have three months or so every year when he’s making very little, if any, income. We also started following your plan recently, too, and have $1,000 set aside for our starter emergency fund.

Pig wrestling doesn’t make many people think about their wedding - but there I was telling the people around me Saturday night at the pig wrestling about how I pig wrestled the week before Dane and I got married.

Dave Says

Dear Dave, My husband and I are having arguments about money where our children are concerned. They are both 16, and I think they should have part-time jobs and be learning the value of work. He feels they’re only young once and wants them to enjoy being teenagers.

Pieces of Me

Awhile back, I heard that flamingo parents may lose some of their pink coloration when feeding their chicks. They eventually gain their color back as the chicks begin eating on their own. A Google search told me that this is in fact true.
