Update from Senator Mike Jacobson

Last week marked the final week of all-day committee hearings. In the last three weeks, the standing committees have taken public comment on over 300 bills. Beginning this week, the Legislature will return to morning floor debate and afternoon committee hearings.

Dave Says

Dear Dave, My parents are both in their seventies. They have been healthy and active all their lives, but in spite of them both having good jobs they neglected to plan and save for retirement. Is it my responsibility now to provide them with financial help in their old age?

This past week was a busy one at the Legislature. All the standing committees held morning and afternoon hearings, which will continue again this week.

Pieces of Me

This past weekend we had our first youth basketball tournament experience. The last kid I watched play in a youth basketball tournament is now married and due with her first baby this month - my sister, who is eight years younger than I am. So it’s been a few years.

Dave Says

Dear Dave, I’m single, and I make $35,000 a year. Next year, my salary and bonuses should be around $50,000.

Update from Senator Mike Jacobson

This week, the Legislature hosted Governor Jim Pillen to give his State of the State address. The Governor proposed a very austere budget that provides for a 1.3% annual average increase in State spending during the two-year period ending June 30, 2025.

Pieces of Me

I had a special request for this week’s Pieces of Me by Mullen’s Cedarview Cemetery board president. To give myself kudos. Hey, I’m always happy to do that! Ha, ha, ha!

Dave Says

Dear Dave, Earlier this month, my husband and I both were laid off from our jobs within a few days of each other. The layoffs were not our fault. The company is letting several people go as a costcutting measure.

Update from Senator Mike Jacobson

Bill introduction came to an end last week with 812 bills and over two dozen constitutional amendments introduced. We also adopted the permanent rules for how the Legislature will operate this biennium.

Pieces of Me

If you need an accountability partner, I suggest partnering with a kid. Several months ago I mentioned to our kids, Teal - 9 and Danielle - 5, that we should start having a monthly family movie night.
